Do you need a US company to get paid online?
Updated 2026-10-20
Forming a US company is the most-repeated advice for founders in countries without Stripe. It works, but it is rarely the right first step.
What it unlocks
- A Stripe account and US banking for the company.
- Easier contracts with US clients and investors.
- Lower per-sale fees than a merchant of record once revenue is significant.
What it really costs
Stripe Atlas charges $500 one-time to form the company. After the first year you pay recurring costs: state fees and taxes, a registered agent, and US tax filings — and often an accountant to prepare them. You are also responsible for VAT and sales tax on your sales unless you add a tax tool.
Your home country may also tax the company's profits or require you to declare a foreign company. Ask a local accountant before forming one.
Stripe Atlas is not the only option. Services such as Firstbase also form US companies for founders abroad, with different company types, states and add-ons. Compare the total yearly cost, not just the setup price.
A simple rule
- No revenue yet: start with a merchant of record. Prove people will pay.
- Steady revenue, and fees or limits are hurting: compare the yearly cost of a US company with the fees you would save.
- Raising money from US investors: a US company is usually expected.
